From our friends at the Wekiva Wild and Scenic River System

Winter months are ideal for hiking in Florida, with the best time of year ranging between October and April. Learn all the basic tips and tricks to ensure your hike is a fun (and safe!) time.

What to Bring:

  • Water

  • Snacks

  • Map, GPS or compass

  • First aid basics

  • Optional: Hiking stick

What to Wear:

Be sure to be mindful of humidity and heat: breathable clothing is your best friend. Using lightweight and moisture-wicking materials will help you tackle the Florida climate, even in colder weather. Avoiding cotton material is recommended. Make sure to use running shoes or hiking boots, and wear a sun hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun.

Where to Hike:

We look forward to you joining one of our hiking trails! Some recommended trails include:

Wekiwa Springs

  • Orange Trail (5.3 miles)

  • Red Trail (7.75 miles)

  • Green Trail (8 miles)

  • White Trail (13.5 miles)

Rock Springs Run State Reserve

Other Tips:

  • Find a hiking buddy: Avoid hiking alone to reduce risk of being helpless with an illness or injury. At minimum, make sure to inform your family and friends of your intended hike and trail length.

  • Avoid discussing your plans with strangers or on social media to reduce risk of harassment.

  • Never leave your pack and personal items unattended.

  • Make sure to have updated trail guides and maps, you can use the FTA website for information on local contacts and trail closures.
