Little Wekiva Restoration
We have great news to report! Seminole County has officially commenced the initial remediation work on the area of the Little Wekiva River most devastated by the intrusion of thousands of tons of sediment described in earlier reports. This will include bringing in and deploying heavy equipment to multiple sites in the project area in preparation for the sediment removal, further treatment of invasive plants, and construction of temporary sediment traps at both ends of the project area.
An electric sign has been placed on Ibis Road notifying neighbors to expect lots of truck traffic due to Little Wekiva River remediation. Seminole County held a neighborhood meeting on June 19 providing information on what to expect. This first component of the project is expected to continue until December.
Before the sediment removal phase can begin, we STILL need a further federal EPA approval. This is because a portion of the project support ($688,000) is from federal funds that Congresswoman Murphy arranged for us, and that EPA approval is (slowly) progressing. We are in touch with Rep. Cory Mills’ office who promises to check in on the progress at EPA. We are very grateful for Shannon Wetzel and others at Seminole County who have and continue to champion this project through its numerous phases and impediments. Stay tuned for more progress!
