A Message from our friends at the Springs Council - your calls and emails, really do make a difference!
February 14th- “We just learned that HB 1641 was temporarily postponed, meaning it will NOT be heard or voted on today.
Last week advocates were successful in getting the Senate version off its agenda. This week you all came through spectacularly once again, especially considering the short notice, and it paid off.
Nothing’s over til it’s over, but each win increases the odds that we will stop these bad bills this session.
We owe you a big thanks for sending in those comments to committee members. We are also grateful to local advocates who mobilized to protect the springs and rivers of Weeki Wachee, Rainbow, and Ichetucknee State Parks.”
BACKGROUND:
“Senate Bill 1126 and House Bill 1641 would take away local governments’ and state agencies' ability to regulate any single-use cup, bottle, bag, or other packaging.
It would remove State Park regulations that keep single use containers off spring fed rivers. The bills had made it through one committee stop in each Chamber. Last week the Florida Springs Council and partner organizations successfully got SB 1126 withdrawn from the agenda of the Senate Committee. This morning, HB 1641 was likewise withdrawn from its agenda.
This is proof that advocacy, including your calls and emails, really do make a difference! We hear from lawmakers when they get an influx of concerned advocates contacting them, and springs advocates are showing up in a meaningful way!
We can’t promise you that we will win every time you take an action. But we can promise that we will lose if you don’t.”
