A Message from our President
Hello Friends of the Wekiva River!
As Summer draws to a close and 2023 begins I wanted to thank you for your gracious support and let you know what Friends of the Wekiva River (FOWR) has been doing in support of The River and our community. Your community.
Numerous events and activities are being planned for you as our weather begins to cool down, including educational activities in the Wekiva ecosystems, advocacy training and of course outings in the field including paddles and informative hikes. Here’s our event calendar. Make sure to reserve your spot today!
Our volunteers (we have no paid staff!) continue to provide our leaders information about detrimental activities to the Wekiva River Protection Area whenever it becomes necessary. It is an ongoing task that requires seeking expert guidance and input as we share our concerns with regulators, public officials and the community.
In addition, our volunteers and board members contribute important information to various organizations and groups in our area and statewide to benefit water policy and statewide clean spring efforts every week of the year. It is a heavy burden to bear considering the amount of pollutants that impact our watersheds every second of every day. We lean heavily on science to attempt to make improvements to our Wekiva. Our speaker's bureau is another way you can contribute by inviting us to a group meeting or your HOA for 15 minutes for a Wekiva River Update.
Please take a moment to read through our newsletter and join us as we need your support, our community's support, more than ever. There are so many things you can do to allow us to make a bigger impact right here. Locally. Right now, to save the Wekiva River for generations to come.
Please consider joining us as a volunteer or making a small monthly contribution before the close of 2023. 100% of your contributions allow us to be the voice of the Wekiva. A voice on the Wekiva's behalf.
We hope to invite you to a ribbon cutting in the first half of 2024 to help celebrate the grand opening of a new pavilion being constructed at Katie's Landing. This is a project FOWR has been spearheading with the generosity of numerous donors and organizations invested in the Wekiva River's protection and water quality. More on that soon in the coming months. Stay tuned.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the FOWR President and communicate to you our ongoing work and plans for the future.
Sincerely,
Mark Pafford, President
