Field Trip to the Ethel Settlement

February 11, 2023- On a most beautiful Saturday morning about 35 people gathered  at the Kiosk for The Ethel Settlement in Rock Springs Run State Reserve. Here Don Philpot told the group about the Ethel Community and the early settlers who founded Ethel. Don also shared his vision for developing an educational center for students and adults alike. This will include constructing two cabins, replicating those that the settlers would have built and lived in. In one, artifacts and history will be displayed.  The other will be furnished as the early settlers would have furnished it. Hiking paths will lead to the cemetery where gravestones preserve the names and dates of some of those settlers.

Paul Lammardo described the characteristics of the natural communities we passed through. And, Paul described ongoing management efforts being undertaken to restore those areas where the natural communities have been altered over the years.

We all came out of the woods with a greater appreciation of what is involved in managing the preserve and the passion required to preserve history by bringing it to life.

HUGE thanks to Don Philpot, Paul Lammardo, our FOWR educational committee and to all the participants that came out to make it a great and educational morning!
