Spring 2025 Update on the Little Wekiva River

The Little Wekiva River continues to flow through the remediation area, although some areas are extremely shallow and barely passable by kayak. This is because some of the sediment that remained upstream of the project area has passed through the gabion baskets and is slowly moving downstream. Additional sediment removal will be needed unless the sediment can all pass downstream to deeper water. Seminole County continues to work with St. Johns River Water Management District to monitor and assess next steps.

In the meantime, photos in this report taken March 9 show a river trying to heal. In some areas it feels again like you are sitting in the middle of a beautiful painting from the Wekiva PaintOut. You can also see the small wall of sand making its way down the river from the gabion baskets. Most of the area is currently navigable by kayak and canoe. There remains a large fallen tree blocking one area that is going to be removed by a county contractor.

The March 10 Seminole County tornado passed very loudly over the Little Wekiva River in the remediation project area. No areas of further disruption to the river or additional trees blocking the river were observed from the tornado.

Hang in there Little Wekiva River! Stay tuned for further updates.
