Update on Little Wekiva River

We have major progress to report on the Little Wekiva River remediation! Seminole County and their contractors have just begun the next phase of work, which includes building the sediment traps at either end of the project area and beginning removal of the thousands of tons of sediment that have filled in the river channel.

With the huge rapid influx of sediment that first became visible in late 2019, critical stretches of the river were turned into a hiking trail. Due to this sediment the river has not been navigable by even a kayak since the beginning of 2020. Although the sediment removal/remediation is a lengthy and complex process, we are looking forward to major developments in 2024 that should return the Little Wekiva to its navigable state.

We remain very GRATEFUL for the enduring commitment and expertise of Seminole County in remediating this beautiful branch of the Wekiva River system, tackling each challenge and obstacle that arises, and looking ahead to protecting the river for the future.
